VCCS Hosts Its First College Essay Contest

Victory Christian Center School proudly hosted its inaugural College Essay Contest, engaging both middle school and high school students in a meaningful exploration of higher education. Students were tasked with researching a college they would like to attend and presenting their findings in a well-structured essay. Using a detailed rubric, judges selected the top submissions from each level.

The level of excellence displayed across all grades was truly exceptional. What was originally intended to be one winner per school expanded to recognizing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in both middle and high school due to the outstanding quality of the students’ work. Winners received $150 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd place, and $75 for 3rd place.

Middle School Winners

1st Place — Layla Bean

Duke University

2nd Place — Rico Solomon Jr.

3rd Place — Caleb Pierre

St. John’s University

High School Winners

1st Place — James Reddrick Jr.

University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Special Recognition

Sterniah Pratt received a $50 gift card for her memorable and inspiring biblical quote:

“Faith without works is dead.” — James 2:26 (NKJV)

Sterniah selected this Scripture because she understands that while she has faith that God will provide the resources needed to attend college, she must also put in the work—researching scholarships, preparing academically, and seeking opportunities that align with God’s plan for her life. Her insight beautifully reflects the heart of this contest: trusting God while actively pursuing excellence.

Celebrating Purpose and Future Success

We are incredibly proud of every student who participated in this foundational event. Your commitment, creativity, and vision show that you are preparing not just for college, but for the future God has destined for you. Your hard work today is building the path toward tomorrow’s success.

This inaugural VCCS College Essay Contest was held in partnership with IYCE (Inspiring Youth through College Exposure). We are excited to continue expanding this initiative as we equip our students for college and beyond.
