VCCS KINGS DEFEAT NATIONALLY RANKED UNITED FAITH FALCONS

img_4249webVCCS Kings hosted the nationally ranked United Faith Christian Academy Falcons at home yesterday evening.

The team stayed close, tying the score twice in the first quarter (5-5 then 11-11). Half way through the second quarter, the Falcons gained a one-point lead. The Kings quickly scored to take the lead by 2 points (17-15), with 5:56 left in the 1st half. (2:39 left before half-time) - United Faith pulled away for a 5 pt. lead, but the Kings gained one point at the foul line. The teams went into half-time with a 23-27 Falcons lead.

3rd quarter 5:55 left in play… The Kings scored 3 points in the first part of the 3rd. United Faith excelled on offense to take the lead (31-26 Falcons). The guest team continued to dominate in this quarter; The Kings scored 8 points to bring the lead within four;  38-34 UFCA lead. United Faith eventually scored again, but the Kings gained momentum to keep the score within four with 45 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. The 3rd quarter ended with the Falcons leading by 6 points.  The Kings gained two points to close the lead within 4 (42-36).

4th Quarter …
UFCA scored two points at the start of the fourth, but the Kings answered with a Big 3-point shot, gaining momentum (42-39); UFCA quickly scored 6 points - 48-39.

VCCS scored 2 more points, and then a big 3 point shot to close the lead to four points. The Falcons again extended their lead by 6 points (50-44). The Kings continued to rally back, keeping the game within reach (52-48). The Falcons regained the lead, but the Kings refused to give up and fought back scoring two points from the field and a big 3 point shot to bring the game to a one point difference (56-55 Falcons lead).

Three minutes remaining…
The Kings took the lead by one point (57-56); The United Faith team drew a foul and a technical foul after a wild struggle for the ball. The fouls came largely as a result of some Falcons players losing their cool. The Kings took advantage of the foul shots in their favor scoring five point and extended their lead by 5 with just over a minute left in the game.

Final seconds…
59 seconds left in regulation the UFCA Falcons were charged another foul giving the Kings another point at the foul line (62-58). The game ended with exciting play literally down to the final seconds. The Kings managed to hold their lead and win 65-61.

The Varsity Girls and Boys teams will face Gaston Day in away games on this coming Friday, January 13th.
